About Coffee Cultivation in Brazil
It is believed that coffee was brought to colonial Brazil in the early 18th century by the sailor Francisco Melo Palheta, who allegedly brought seeds back from a voyage to French Guiana.
Coffee cultivated in Brazil is highly productive, which has allowed the country to maintain a leading position in the coffee industry for many years. The development of coffee culture was relatively fast due to the millions of people working in the sector. Regarding sustainable production, Brazil ranks among the best. The country has environmental legislation that regulates coffee production to meet specific environmental and social standards.
As the largest producer, Brazil aims to balance flora, fauna, and coffee cultivation to ensure the preservation of biodiversity. It is known as a reliable supplier that meets demand without compromising its natural resources.
Brazil has 2 million hectares of land dedicated to coffee cultivation. Most of these crops are grown at low altitudes and on open or sun-exposed land. Thanks to the tropical climate, year-round sunshine, and regular rainfall, the country is able to produce high-quality Arabica and Robusta coffee.
Harvesting is done manually or mechanically depending on the size of the farm. After harvest, the cherries pass through a tank where they are washed, and leaves, branches, and other debris are removed. Some farms then perform a second hand selection of the best cherries, removing any that are not fully ripe or do not meet quality standards.
Next is the drying process. An important aspect of Brazilian coffee cultivation is that most farms dry the coffee naturally in the sun. This is possible due to the favorable climate conditions that allow for open-air drying. Although it is a longer process, it is precisely here that the beans develop the best flavors characteristic of Brazilian coffee.
